JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of the Project Foreman over seen by the Housing Director, carpenter and building construction duties for housing projects and tribal facilities. Duties include ensuring the quality of construction work, following building plans that guarantee cold climate construction methods and building codes are implemented, reviewing job priorities to help keep the housing crew on schedule, and completing carpentry, general construction duties and related work as required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform carpenter duties with housing construction crew based upon supervision and direction. Ensure the quality of carpentry work.
- Constructs, repairs, restores and installs structures such as floors, doors, walls, windows, stairways, furniture, cabinets, shelves, and roofs.
- Plan and build tribal building and residential construction projects for new home construction projects, home renovation projects, residential emergency assistance program and other approved tribal housing activities.
- Follow building plans that guarantee cold climate construction methods and building codes are implemented.
- Follow safety procedures and practices. Operates and performs preventative maintenance on hand and power saws, planers, lathes, joiners, shapers, drills, sanders and a variety of tools.
- Assist in reporting construction progress.
- With the housing staff, assist in notifying when construction material is needed.
- Assist in tracking materials allocated to housing projects for costs and inventory management.
- Regular clean-up of shop and job site to maintain a safe environment.
- Proper disposal of construction waste and garbage.
- Help ensure quality craftsmanship on projects.
- Complete general construction duties and related work as required.
- Other duties may be assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Skilled knowledge of carpentry and cold-climate residential building construction including plumbing and boiler systems. At least 3 years of job experience.
- High School Diploma/GED equivalent.
- Knowledge of hand and power tools including safe operation.
- Ability to lift at least 70 pounds.
- Ability to work well as a team.
- Knowledge of workplace safety.
- Alaska driver’s license.
- Pre-employment drug screening.
- Criminal background check.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, AND SKILLS:
- Journeyman or Certified Carpenter.
- Knowledge of federal, state and tribal housing programs, including the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA) and Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) a plus.
- Knowledge of the lifestyles and culture of the people of Kotzebue and the Northwest Arctic Borough.
- Preferred: tribally enrolled member of the Native Village of Kotzebue.
